Past-perfect

14Jul08

Tony Gnoffo, managing editor of Knowledge@Wharton U.S. Edition, relishes a peek at the past — more than 20 years past, in fact — when his photo (lower right) appeared as a new-hire mention in the Philadelphia Inquirer’s newsroom newsletter in late 1986. Gnoffo was one of more than 300 people who attended a reunion on July 12 celebrating the Inquirer’s glory years and the leadership of editor Gene Roberts, 1972-1990. More reunion photos.

I wonder if the reporters, editors, photographers, etc. working under Gene Roberts at the Inquirer realized at the time that they were living through Camelot. I’m sure many of them have made that realization, given the conditions that exist at most newspapers today.

“Don’t let it be forgot, that once there was a spot, for one brief shining moment that was known as Camelot”
